Is there really a hearing/seeing theme in Revelation?

In Revelation, John sometimes hears about something, but when he looks, he sees something very different. For example, he hears about a lion, but when he looks, he sees a lamb (Rev 5:5-6). Both are symbols of Christ. He also hears about 144,000 Jews but sees an innumerable multitude from all nations (Rev 7:4, 9). Does that mean that the 144,000 Jews and the innumerable multitude describe the same group of people?
